Subject: L. Tom Perry in Ventura
From: samuel.crapo@myldsmail.net
Hello family and Friends,
Its been another week and I'm feeling much better from being
sick! I don't have much time so let me hustle and send my weekly
doings to you ha ha!
Monday 3-5-12
We came to the church and did email. We left and did our shopping and
what not at home. Then we came back to the church and played a TON of
basketball. We had the Zone Leaders come up and play with us and we
played a lot. I'm still not very good... ha ha But it was fun. While
we were there i brought the rope elder Pulham gave me, Elder Casteneda
(ZL) was like are you any good with that? I was like, run lets see if
i can get ya. So he's running and i was going to rope his foot like
elder Pulham used to do all the time.... And i went to rope him and it
didn't feel right so i thought i wasn't going to rope him, but i just
went through the rest of the motions and i did rope him. Stuck him on
the ankle and accidentally pulled him to the ground. Ha ha it was
funny. I was getting really good at that in Tehachapi but i didn't
think i could do it anymore. It had been way too long. But i guess i
still got it.
Then we came home and i wrote lots of letters. The Guidos write me
quite a bit so i have made an oath that if i ever get a letter i have
to respond to it... so i ain't gonna quit yet! ha ha
Then we went to the Gouffs home. They are super cool. They had a lot
of people there. They were having an "Empty Nester's" get together.
And so we went to that and ate dinner with them. It was good.
Then we tried contacting a family. But they were busy :( We went in
because elder Marquez took a really bad fall on his leg at basketball
and hurt his foot. He was having a hard time walking so we came in
and i gave him some horse liniment to put on his foot. and his foot
was better the next day :) That stuff works miracles.
Tuesday 3-6-12
We went to San Louis, because we were going to have interviews with
president. We had training by our Zone Leaders and the Assistants.
Which was long and boring. The interview was extremely short and very
anti climactic.
When we got home we went to Paso Robles to contact a Referral who wasn't home.
Then we went tot the church and watched the Joseph Smith Movie with
Cameron (our investigator who is getting baptized in April)
Then we went to the Millers (part member family) and taught a way good
lesson to them. Committed the Husband (who is not a member) to read
and pray about the book of Mormon.
Then we came in for dinner. Didn't have anyone signed up.
Wednesday 3-7-12
We went to a lady's apartment, her name is Kathy, she's a member, but
she gets lonely and calls the missionaries up to come do stuff for
her. She'll kind of take advantage of you if you keep going but we
decided we'd go over and plant some seeds for her. So we did. And it
was pretty easy.
Then we had only about an hour till our next appointment and if you
ever have about an hour to spare before your next appointment, you
cant do much. Especially without the car because it takes an hour to
get anywhere on your bike. So.... we do something we call "Goin' on
walk about" (Australian Accent) Where we pretty much walk on the
streets to find people we can preach at ha ha.
Then the Barretts took us to a Chinese buffet which was very nice of
them. They are super cool. Their granddaughter who is only 19 is
getting married! She should have waited for elder Crapo cuz she's
cute.... but i guess not ;) ha ha ha just kidding.
Then we were on bikes until 6PM! Gosh! Just going everywhere! Looking
for people to bother. Our Teaching pool is not that large so we are
trying to grow it. But i feel like we are doing nothing but knocking
on doors with no one in there and riding bikes...... Sooooooo..... we
need some miracles ha ha.
While we were looking for people. My companion decided to pull an
"elder lane" and go down a hill with no hands and standing on the
peddles of the bike, so you lean forward and rest your thighs on the
handlebars and thats how you control your bike.... pretty much stupid.
Anyways, I've already gone down this hill and he is flying behind me
doin' that evil Knievel stuff and i move over a little bit and i guess
i got in his way because he was about to fly past me, and he had to
swerve out of the way and he ate asphalt BAD! ha ha i just stood there
and watched... not much i could do. I thought he had broken his leg
or back! ha ha but he was OK, his knee hurt all week though.
Then we had dinner with the Rayners who are SUPER Good cooks!
Thursday 3-8-12
We did Mormon.org in the morning which was great! i hadn't done that
in a while. Had lunch... Mac'n'cheese.
Then we took the car and put the bikes on the back and went to Paso
Robles. Did some work there.
We then took our bikes and rode to Templeton. That took a good hour.
I found a County radio on the side of the road. Had i not been on a
mission i would have had a little fun with that talking to the guys on
the other end. But i didn't! we were having dinner with a family and
the husband is a C.H.P. (california Highway Patrol) and i gave it to
him, he called some peeps and got the radio back to them.
Then they gave us a ride back to the car. And we threw our bikes back
on and went to an investigators house, She had a whole bunch of
people in her garage who were smoking and drinking. And part of me
was like... eh we probably shouldn't get involved in that but then the
other part of me says I'm a missionary and I'm protected and i need to
got talk to this lady. So i listened to that and we went and actually
found out that the guys in the garage were Mormons... they just had
gone down the wrong path and are super less active. Super nice
though. There was also another guy in there who was looking for the
right religion called himself a "lost sheep" and we got to stand
around and talk with all of them and our investigator for a while.
Friday 3-9-12
We did our weekly planning inside. We were doing a car fast. so no
car that day.
Then we went and got lunch at a place called Sylvesters. Its a famous
burger place.
Then we did tons of biking. Didn't get to see too many people :(
Then we went to the church to help set up some tables for something?
Then we came home and the Kessingers picked us up for dinner. It was
a way good time. Because the wife (they are older) knows how to play
the piano really well and we all gathered around the piano and she
played old doo wop songs and we sat around and sang. Old songs like
Earth Angel and Chapel of love, except they call it temple of love ha
ha and just stuff like that! It was pretty sweet.
Saturday 3-10-12
I drove us all the way to Ventura! Took 3 hours!
We got to shake hands with L. Tom Perry and listen to him speak which
was sweet.
Then i drove us home, which was another 3 hours... 283 miles round trip.
Then we came in and figured out miles for the rest of the month. We
only get 34 miles per day... what a joke ha ha.
Then we had dinner with the Nichols. They are one of my favorite
families out here. He was loading up his truck with dirt bikes
because they are going dirt biking today. When i get home i want to
get a Honda 250 dirt bike to ride whenever we go four wheeling!
Sunday 3-11-12
We had church. And before our church started some guy walked in from
off the street and wanted to "Study the bible" he was kind of bashing
at the door but we got him interested and now we are going to go see
him this week.
Later we had dinner with the Haselhuhn's and they were telling me all
the places they have been to in england! Almost all the sights we saw!
Warwick Castle, Stonehenge, Dover White Cliffs. It was cool. Mum,
she would like your Yorkshire Pudding Recipe! ha ha
Anyways that was my week! Thanks for all the support and emails! I
look forward to see who wrote me each Monday! I love and miss you all
a lot!
Love,
Elder Sam Crapo

I got sick...

Subject: I got sick...
From: samuel.crapo@myldsmail.net
Hey family and friends!
So this week was a weird one. I didn't keep a journal at all
because i was sick ALL WEEEEEEEK. I'm still sick :( I haven't done
much. I just got a cold real bad on Monday night and its lasted a
week.. I'm feeling a little better! We still went out and tried to
work, but it was a lot harder with a sinus headache. Kind of a lame
week for teaching too.... Everybody was sick! So i guess it was a good
time to get sick because everyone canceled their appointments! ha ha
We picked up a new investigator this week. He came to church
last Sunday with his mom and told us to come over and teach him. We
were stoked! So we go over on Tuesday like they said, and she forgot
and told us to come back Thursday. So we came back Thursday, She is
from Thailand and made us some Thai food, Cleared up them sinus'
really really well! Anyways we were teaching this guy and he seemed
to be really into in... and then i asked him if we could watch a video
(restoration) and he said that he was taking a break from electronics
and then i said OK would you read out of the book of Mormon? and he
said I'm taking a break from reading too, and he was like, I'd better
go. and he just got up and left.... it was kind of weird. We were
talking to his mom and i guess he's not all there. Can only take so
much information at one time... so i guess we overloaded him. That
was pretty much our only lesson though.
We had a cool dinner with a family... the Nichols. The dad is
awesome, I'm pretty sure he is sponsored to ride dirt bikes and has a
sweet truck with his sponsors stickers all over it. He served his
mission in Jamaica! He told us some CRAZY stories, not only about how
people got hurt there a lot, but how the missionaries were pretty much
a part of the gangs there, and the gang members took care of them.
Like he said somebody stole their scriptures and the "rude boys" (gang
members) where like "what happened to your books?" and they said they
got stolen and the guys were like "don't worry we will get them back
for you" and the next day they had their scriptures... but they killed
someone to get them back. Like just crazy stuff like that. And the
way you would have to introduce yourself to them to make sure they
don't kill you on the streets he said he would rap for them, it was
funny.
Hmmmm what else happened this week.... We did A LOT of walking as
usual. we did A LOT of biking as usual. And we did very little
driving. This Saturday we get to go to Ventura and see L. Tom Perry!
He is speaking to the mission! And because of that the drive is going
to steal about.... 300 miles of ours. So we only get 36 miles a day!
We have people who live 20 miles from where we live! So its pretty
much a joke... oh well.
I got my little box from mum! Thanks I've sent you a letter in
return. I liked your letter too! you're starting to write "ha ha" in
your letters! I've converted you! :D I still remember the first
couple text messages you sent me! ha ha! SO FUNNY!
Oh! Cool story i have failed to mention. The companion I'm
currently serving with, his best friend is in this mission. Like from
Maryland.... they were best friends did EVERYTHING together! Elder
Volk, Rememeber that name? Elder Volk was in the MTC with me! So that
was so cool. Every time he talks about hanging out with friends elder
Volk is in all the stories because it was literally his BEST friend.
How sweet is that? Anyways i thought that was cool...
Ummmmmm thats pretty much it... i miss you guys and love you guys
all a lot! I look forward to hearing from you ALL haha

Howdy Family and Friends,
Another week down, its so weird that I've been out a year. I feel
like I'm starting over except this time i know how to do everything ha
ha. Here's how my week went!
Monday 2-21-12
I don't remember what happened... it was p-day ha ha
Tuesday 2-22-12
We are running really short on miles in the car and we still had to
take a trip to Santa Maria later in the week for Zone Conference so we
decided to ride our bikes from Atascadero to Paso Robles, look it up
on map quest... its quite the ride. Took about an hour and a half,
but on top of that we worked up there, did a bunch of bike riding up
there trying to see people. We also ate lunch at McDonald's and i was
watching a Homeless guy outside sitting on the street asking for
money, and i felt really bad for him and i had a gift card so i
decided to just buy him a lunch. It was sweet, he was really
appreciative. There were actually two Homeless guys, begging for
money, they were just on opposite sides of the street. So i treated
them to lunch. Big Mac and fries and lemonade on me. They were
really really grateful.
Then we left to ride back home. We had to be at an appointment at
5:00 so we left at 3:30 to be there on time... gosh! So we took a
different way back, if you look on map quest and see the road called
Creston that goes WAY East i think? We too that home... And it was
about 23 miles... took about 2 and half hours... It was a great ride
and lots of good things to see, too bad i didn't take many pictures
because i was too tired, i didn't want to have to stop, plus we BARELY
made our next appointment, we will NOT be going that way ever again.
ha ha.
Then we had a lesson with the kid we are teaching that is getting
ready to be baptized, but the person he wants to have baptize him
isn't coming to California until April. So his baptism date has been
pushed back all the way till April 21st! Crazy!
But then we went to dinner at the Mortorffs home. Their daughter just
returned home from a mission in France. She's such a sister
missionary ha ha. But they are pretty cool.
Then we stopped in town and made a ton of calls to try and make
appointments over the phone, and we decided to go see a guy we ran
into later in the week. He let us in and introduced us to his wife,
they are so awesome. He is a Hispanic guy who loves to pray and isn't
very religious. And i can totally see him getting baptized. His name
is David and his wifes name is Leticia, we left them with a book of
Mormon and we hope they will read.
Wednesday 2-22-12
We stayed in pretty late writing up lists of people to go see.
Updating the area book and what not. I hate staying in longer than i
need to but if we don't plan right then our day is bad, especially
since we have to track miles and stuff... so.
Then we went contacting people pretty much all day.
We had dinner with the Osman family.
Then some appointments canceled at night.... but we had correlation
with our ward mission leader brother Mattice in the Atascadero 1st
ward.
Thursday 2-23-12
We went to brother Micklesons house, he's an old guy who is awesome,
kind of a farmer/gardener guy. Good hard worker. He had us come over
an prune his palm trees and then he wanted to take us out to lunch.
He grabbed us some cowboy hats and we went to his favorite diner and
had all you can eat tacos. It was a lot of fun. He said he would get
us some of our very own cowboy hats so we don't look so foreign.
Then we came in and did our weekly planning.
We ate dinner
Contacted peeps
had a lesson with a recent convert named Meghan at a members house and
it went really well.
We traveled a lot of miles that day going to and from Templeton to
Paso Robles and stuff. I Think we drove 63 miles... we are on a 40
mile budget per day. But we still had plenty of miles to get to Santa
maria and back with extra. But Elder Damuni had a slight conniption
over us going over but i let him know it was no biggy ha ha.
Friday 2-24-12
We went to Zone Conference, it was a way nice drive and a pretty good
meeting. I got to see a lot of missionaries I've served around. its
so good to see some of them. They just installed these things into
our cars called Tiwi, and basically it monitors your car. If you
don't buckle up, or if you speed, or if you drive aggressively a voice
comes on and tells you to fix it and then docks you points and then
the president gets a report and can take your driving privileges away
for not driving right. We all got cards and when you get into the
card you have to swipe it past the "Tiwi" box and it logs you in. I
don't like it because i try to keep up with traffic out here and its
telling me to drive like a granny.... not fun.
We were supposed to have presidents interviews after Conference but he
canceled it because of time.
But they told us that L. Tom Parry is coming to the mission next week!
I'm stoked, but yet again we have to save like 300 miles to get to
Ventura and back.
Then I drove us all home and it was pretty foggy, it was sweet!
Then we went to an appointment with a member but our appointment
wasn't home... :(
Then we tried to contact a Less active guy and he turned down the
opportunity for us to come in and share a spiritual thought... super
nice guy, just really against the church i guess? He's a return
missionary too which i don't get..."thus we see how quick the children
of men forget their god" ha ha thats all i can think of when i meet
those kind of people.
Then we got pizza for dinner and went to bed.
Saturday 2-25-12
We taught a woman on her door steps. The whole restoration, she was
super nice and pretty interested, she wanted to cook us breakfast ha
ha. Her name is Jenny! our new investigator :)
Then we tried contacting more people.
Then we ate lunch.
Then we went and did service, we moved a recent convert in to their apartment.
When we got home Elder Seumanu and Elder Damuni came in and they
were... quiet.. so i went to go see what was up and i guess they got
in a fight? Some guy almost hit them with his car and then got out of
his car and elder Seaumanu started fighting him. He ended up with a
deep cut on his face... I was gonna clean it out but i was like...
uh... you should probably get stitches... Not good! But seumanu can
handle it. He's a big Samoan dude!
Then we contacting people and picked up another investigator named
Theresa! She's cool.. The lesson was a little awkward because there
were so many distractions.
Then we went and talked to some really cool people and some really not
so cool people.
We ate dinner at A&W.
Then we went out on the back roads in Atascadero to find members. It
was SUPER Dark and out in the middle of nowhere. Ha ha you guys
should send me a Go Pro (Camera i can attach to my helmet) you would
be shocked by the roads we ride on! ITS CRAZY! i have put so many
miles on my bike. And i was talking to a guy that thinks i could get
probably a couple thousand dollars out of selling my bike. They say
that the old Trek Carbon frames that i have a worth a TON. So the guy
said to sell it as soon as possible if it doesn't mean much to me
because i will trash it and it will probably mean a TON to someone
else. Then i could get a brand new bike and make out with a couple
extra thousand ha ha... everyone who sees my bike says its SUPER RARE.
So maybe when i get home I'll put it up on eBay and buy my motorcycle
with the money (if my bike doesn't get stolen by then).
Anyways i think thats it! Thanks so much for everything! I got a few
letters this week which was sweet! Continue to do so and i will
continue to love you ha ha!
LOVE

so cool people.

Year Mark
OH GOSH WHAT HAPPENED?!?! I'VE BEEN OUT A YEAR ALREADY AHHHHGHGHGH ITS GOING BY TOO FAST!!!!!!! Hi Family and Friends, Sorry i was a bit dramatic there but seriously! Where is the time going? Its so crazy!!! Monday 2-13-12 We did our studies Went to email Barber dan brought us dohnuts :) Played Basketball Cut my hair Cut elder coles hair... again. Showered and changed Spanish dropped us off to do shopping Wrote letters and did laundry Had dinner then contacted potentials and found a new guy!!!!!! YES. We didnt have the car. So we had to walk to our area and then walk to find this guy, but he is super cool. Had a lesson with him. It was super cold and rainy too... Tuesday 2-14-12 Let me just get this out of the way, when i say "contacted people" that means we have these big long lists of people who have been contacted by missionaries in the past and they are called "potentials" because they have "Potential" for taking the lessons, so those are the people we see when i say we "contacted people" So all morning we Contacted people. Then we ate lunch at Jack in the box. Then we contacted lots of other people. Then we had a way good Lesson with Kameron! Kid is on fire! He is ready to be Tized! His baptism is supposed to be the 25th... but the bishop wants to push it back a week because its stake temple day... whatev... but at least its still happenin. Then we took a picture by the Atascadero sign, and as we were doing it we couldnt really get a good picture.... but a guy was walking up and elder Marquez was like, hey lets ask this guy if he'll take our picture, i was like nah its just too dark, so all the sudden 3 cop cars pull up around us and they get out and start interrogating this guy... and we were like uh... are we in trouble, they were like nah you can go. So we left and elder marquez was like dude you saved my life, that guy was probably a murderer and had i asked him to take our picture he probably would have killed me haha whatever! But hey that was fun! Then we gave a Less active woman a blessing, went on some really windey back rodes and it was super dark. It was cool. I also got a super awesome package from the GUIDOS!!! IF YOU GUYS READ THIS THANK YOU AND I HOPE YOU GET MY LETTER I SENT! Wednesday 2-15-12 We had district meeting... Tried seeing people on bikes... we do a lot of biking, if not more than simi valley... it was cold ... We saw potentials all day had a lesson planned for a kid named collin but he didnt who up the the appointment. Then we biked to A&W for dinner, elder marquez had never had it so he really liked that. But he didnt like the ride there because it was FREEZING and he didnt bring his jacket, because he thought it was ugly, this guy would risk his life just so he didnt look bad, constantly checking his hair, and appearance haha he's a goof ball. An awesome companion but kind of down on himself. He could be really good if he put some effort in. Then we got ready for Exchanges with the ZL's Thursday 2-16-12 MY YEAR MARK! YIKES! I was with elder Casteneda, he had to conduct another District meeting in Paso Robles so we went up there and i got to play ZL for a little bit. That was weird... Then we came home and got pizza for lunch. I had a lot of change left over from going to the laundry mat washing everything i had from those bed bugs. So we bought the pizza with that. I spent so much money on those stinkin bed bugs... Then we had a lesson with a guy named Rodil. It went pretty good. Guy is a little goofy but he is cool Then we had a lesson with a guy named Dennis, he is a former investigator, but he wants to get his life together... Just gets himself into trouble and has some addictions, but we are trying to help him. Then we saw brenda, she is a new investigator, she is super cool. Only got to talk to her outside for a little bit. Then ate dinner at Bishop Haselhuhn's house except he wasnt home. So it was just his son and his wife. They are pretty funny though. We almost hit a dog driving around... that was cool. Little sparky ran right into the road and i thought he was road kill.. good thing my spidey senses kicked in at the last minute. Then we went and saw the Taylors, Rayners, and Staleys. Didnt do much teaching though. We saw a Collin, the kid who bailed a couple days before, and we taught him at the door. We also saw a kid who was a referral from BYU and he's pretty cool. Just asked for a book of mormon to see what we believe... not really interested. Then we changed back into our regular companionships and we went out into the backyard and burned a shirt for my one year mark.. Very anti climactic haha but oh well. Still did it. I learned a lot from elder Casteneda, and he said i was doing great, he said "you'll make a good leader" but i dont know if i really wanna be a leader, you have to do so much other stuff than missionary work... egh, i'll do it if i'm called but i dont look forward to it haha. Friday 2-17-12 Had weekly planning, it took a long time and i pretty much did everything. My comp has a hard time focusing but i dont mind, i mean its hard to make plans for an area i know nothing about but hey, i dont care! Then my comp was making tons of noises so i was like Elder Lets play the quiet game first one to talk loses, well he took it super literal and didnt end up speaking until 2:40 pm... haha It was driving me bonkers. Then we contacted some people on bikes... Then we had a lesson with Kameron again, he is such an awesome kid. Then we had dinner with the Kessingers, they were way fun, they are going to sandy soon because they have kids that live there, they showed me a map of the area, and i could see Sego Lilly on it and stuff, like i knew exactly where it was but our house wasnt on the map. They said if i have anything i need to send home then they will take it for me! haha Saturday 2-18-12 We had Correlation at 10:15 AM at brother delbars home. We drove to Paso Robles but took our bikes with us to save miles... This area is a lot harder to bike than simi was, this place has hills EVERYWHERE, my thighs are getting big... i might need some new pants soon i cant really fit into some of them. So PARENTS *** if you go online and see if you can find "Levi Action Slacks" size 33L 33W i know its odd numbers but its what i need... Maybe i can fit a 34 34 maybe even a 32 34? the length on all my pants is getting shorter so i best stay with 34L. Anyways i found a pair of these levi action slacks at a thrift store and they are seriously my best pants, so comfortable and so crisp and so nice. so just in case you get me pants, those ones are BOMB. Then we saw a lot of people, did a TON of biking. We were able to go to Collins basketball game, it was super cool. Then we saw more potentials, ran into a guy who was working on some nice motorcycles in his front yard. I still want my Triumph Bonneville, but he was working on a Honda Scrambler that looked pretty sick as well... so i might have to do some bike shopping when i get home. Then we saw more people, taught a lady named Chris, taught her the whole restoration on her doorstep. She is so cool. But she is shy to try anything new, christian. Then we went to the church and helped them set up for the ward social. The social was small and was pretty fun. They gave us a whole chicken and rolls to take home but on the way home i saw two Homeless people and i gave it to them :) They were very grateful. Sunday 2-19-12 Sundays really arent worth writing about its TONS of church! We have a baptism in two weeks coming up... We ate dinner at the Gough's they are so cool. they have THE COOLEST property line ever! They are going to let us come over and do some service for them, i was like begging them to let us come over and do service! I'm stoked! But that is pretty much it! Thanks mum for the two cards and money... they help out a TON. When you're in a car you tend to eat out more... haha And thank you also sarah for the box of goodies and the card with money. You guys are the best. My birthday cake is still sitting in water... its been in there since last week... its supposed to grow 600% its size! And its EDIBLE!?!?! I will try it when it gets that big but for now its probably only twice the size it was when i got it.... hmmmm we'll see. Oh i also have been thinking. For a job, elder Lane used to work for a thing called Serve Pro, and he would drive a truck out to states that were affected by hurricanes and tornados and they would clean up after them. That would be a sick job! So just in case i need a job when i get home which i probably wont because i have a lot of opportunities back here in california ;) i'll just have to remember Serve Pro just in case! Anyways thanks for everything! Send me letters everybody i really love reading about how everyone is doing and i like getting pictures. I cant believe how fast time is flying! Love you all Elder Crapo
